Aidilfitri or Eidul Fitri celebrations — or Hari Raya as Malaysians call it — this year looks likely to be an intimate affair but don’t let it stop you from celebrating in style. Check out this Eid’s collections from Malaysian designers featuring a mixture of traditional designs and loose silhouettes, sets of solid pastels and jewel-toned varieties, as well as a healthy assortment of patterns.
Apart from their usual batik fare, PARCA’s latest Raya collection features various shades of solid- toned and patterned kurung sets. Their items are made out of cotton, ensuring maximum comfort in Malaysia’s humid tropical weather. PARCA’s pieces are sold separately, so one can either mix and match to their heart’s content or get a complete set. The ready-to-wear diffusion line of designer Alia Bastamam. Alia B.’s collection for this year’s Raya is a continuation of the designer’s optimistic and empowering vision in her designs. The Raya 2020 collection itself draws inspiration from the ocean, considered to be the true heart of our planet. The collection’s offerings are anchored in pastel shades and sandy hues, with a mixture of island tie-dye and seashell prints. The designer’s own selected picks include the Thalia dress, a seashell-print draped tunic dress in mint and peach as well as the Liliana kurung, a blush-coloured kaftan top and sarong set. The brainchild of individuals behind Klang Valley’s famed Wondermilk franchise of cafes, Alam & Manusia is an up-and-coming brand known for their signature polka-dots items. Their first Raya collection consists of three different designs, each available in two different colours. Purnama and Kenchana are both distinctly patterned sets, whereas Langit’s sets feature singular pastel tones. You can also twin with the little ones in your family if you wish to. Both the Purnama and Kenchana sets are available in children’s sizes as Little Purnama and Little Kenchana, respectively. Children’s sets are priced at RM149, while women’s sets are priced at RM299.

Named the Moroccan series, the collection creatively interprets colours and patterns from the landscape and valleys of the Sahara desert and the Atlas mountain. Aptly named ‘Nostalgia Raya’, Maslea’s Raya roll-out this year is all about recreating old love. The collection itself was inspired by the memories of the designer’s late grandmother, Masliah, which also happens to be the namesake for the latest women’s range of items. The brand also brought back last-year’s best- seller, the long, alongside their staple classic kebaya and kurung tops. Maslea is also doing a line of men’s baju Melayu under the ‘Jais’ range this year - a first for the brand. Prices start at RM168 for men’s tops, and at RM208 for women’s tops.

The hotly anticipated ready-to-wear Raya Magazine 2020 collection from Melinda Looi features fresh and youthful interpretations of traditional Malay garments. The Baju Kurung, Kebaya and Kedah have been redesigned with eclectic kimono cuts and incorporate newer lace embellishments but are still crafted with traditional batik prints. Melinda’s signature clashing prints and intricate beading details are also incorporated within the Raya Magazine collection. There’s a fair variety of colours to please everyone: choose from either the bold hues of canary yellow, cerise and fuchsia or opt for the softer salmon pink shade.
