World Chocolate Day is celebrated every 7th of July to commemorate the introduction of the sweet confection to Europe in the year 1550. Prior to this, chocolate was limited to only some parts of south and central America as well as Mexico. Legend has it that the Spanish explorer, Hernán Cortés was served with a chocolate-based drink called ‘Xocolātl’ by the Aztec emperor Montezuma.
The explorer took the drink back with him to Spain and added vanilla, sugar and cinnamon to counter the bitter cocoa taste. The new and improved drink then gained popularity in England and France in the 1600s, and then eventually evolved into the many other chocolate-based dishes and delicacies that we’ve all come to love today!
