Direct flight to Redang is set to boost Terengganu Tourism

The tourism industry in Redang is set to soar as Malaysia’s latest commercial airline, SKS Airways, takes off as the only commercial flight to fly travellers to the island. Tourists travelling to Redang can board SKS Airways’ Twin-Otter aircraft from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (IATA Code: SZB) in Subang to Redang STOLport (Short Take-Off and Landing Port) (IATA Code: RDN).

Terengganu Exco of Tourism, Culture, and Information Ariffin Deraman said during the inaugural flight, the availability of a direct flight will revive the tourism sector in Terengganu we tourists now have the option to visit the island either by sea or air.

“It is a historic day as we welcome the efforts of corporates such as SKS Airways to revive the tourism sector in Terengganu. Redang Island is famous for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and the tropical fish that inhabit the numerous reefs, many within 50 feet of the shore.

"The increase following the lifting of interstate travel restrictions gives us the confidence that Redang continues to be a preferred destination for tourists. We believe there will be a high demand,” said Ariffin at the reception to welcome SKS Airways inaugural flight.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airports Managing Director Dato’ Iskadar Mizal Mahmood said the increase in passenger traffic movements in STOLports via SKS Airways will allow Malaysia Airports to operate with more business opportunities to local traders thus contributing to local economic development.

He added that the operation of SKS Airways at two island destinations will ensure that Malaysia Airports provides a good service level at the airports and will continue to work with tourism agencies to market local destinations and help airlines grow their connectivity.

SKS Airways offers easy and direct access to the pristine beaches of Pulau Pangkor (IATA: PKG) beginning 25 January; Pulau Redang on 31 January; and soon Pulau Tioman (IATA: TOD) in the second quarter of 2022. The SKS Airways Twin Otter flights will have 12 scheduled flights per day from all three routes with a full daily capacity of 228 passengers and will be expecting more destinations in the future.
