Avani Sepang offers 315 Polynesian-inspired over-water villas arranged in a cluster resembling The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. Located on the west coast of Malaysia, the resort is just 90km south of the capital city Kuala Lumpur or 40km from the airport. Amenities include a spa, bar, restaurants and a club for kids. 2. River Kwai Jungle Rafts Resort ● Kanchanaburi, Thailand

The award-winning River Kwai Jungle Rafts Resort offers the unique experience of staying in a room “floating” on the historical River Kwai Noi. The walls are weaved from local bamboo decorated with wooden furniture reflecting the ethnic Mon design style. At night, electricity is switched off and the place is lit by traditional kerosene lamps. Guests will have to live without Internet and learn to commune with nature. Located on the world-famous Palm Jumeirah just off the coast of Dubai, Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is said to be the only one offering overwater villas in the UAE. Guests will have access to 400 metres of private beach and enjoy water sports or longtail boating against the backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. TRAVEL TIPS

When you are staying near to the water, be prepared for insects such as sand flies or mosquitoes. Insect repellents would come in handy.
