Rollicking Good Time

Johor’s DESARU COAST offers a fabulous holiday experience for the entire family

If you’re looking for a wholesome family vacation with some great golf thrown in, Desaru Coast fits the bill perfectly.

Spread across 3,900 acres with a 17-kilometre beachfront in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, Desaru Coast certainly provides a ‘whole-in-one’ experience with something for each and every member of the family.

While the town of Desaru has long been a destination for locals, the area was recently given a multi- million ringgit makeover by the government’s investment body, Khazanah Nasional, through its resort development arm, Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd. The aim was to create an internationally-renowned destination and, for all intents and purposes, the endeavour looks to have been a success.

Splashing Fun In The Sun

Apart from the seemingly endless stretches of white, sandy beaches, children and the young-at-heart will love the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark which boasts 20 slides and rides in five zones. The centrepiece of the park is the three-acre Tidal Wave Beach, one of the biggest wave pools in the world with more than four million gallons of water and a 170-metre artificial shoreline.

Thrill-seekers should make a date with Kraken’s Revenge, a combination roller-coaster and splashing flume ride that takes you up 30 metres in rolling ‘boats’, before spinning through a full 360° horizontal loop followed by a 27-metre drop to the pool below. You can reach speeds up to 70km/h along the final drop to the splashing finish!

The Tempest, meanwhile, takes you on two high-energy funnels and a sudden 24-foot drop with pulse- racing high-banking swings. A 55-foot tube slide with funnel in the middle sends you on a swirling vortex before splashdown.

After expanding all that energy, get in a meal and refreshments along with some retail therapy at the neighbouring Desaru Coast Riverside, which has 23 acres of water-fronting restaurants, retail and lifestyle outlets. You can take a stroll on a pier while enjoying great sunset views.

The Els Club Experience

Golfers will absolutely love Desaru Coast as they can drive, chip and putt away to their heart’s content at The Els Club Desaru Coast, which has 45 holes designed two of the game’s biggest legends.

The Els Club Desaru Coast’s Ocean Course is crafted by South African legend Ernie Els, consisting of three superb nine-hole loops – the Lakes, Coast and Ridge. While the fairways are generally wide and receptive, huge, undulating greens and well-crafted run-off areas place a premium on accurate approach play. The course takes you from the inland hills right to the ocean’s edge, creating an unforgettable experience that will leave golfers wanting more.

The dramatic Valley Course, laid out by Fijian great Vijay Singh in collaboration with Ernie Els Design, is a completely different test. Singh has used the elevation changes on the hilly site to perfection, creating a superb mix of testing shots and stunning vistas. Elevated greens with sharp undulations, as well as 175 well-sculptured bunkers, combine to demand excellent ball-striking to get on in regulation.

Stunning Stays & Superb Seafood

Desaru Coast boasts an impressive portfolio of globally-renowned hotels and resorts such as the Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast, right next to the waterpark, Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, One&Only Desaru Coast and The Westin Desaru Coast Resort.

Other options include the sea-fronting Sand Sandals Desaru Beach Resort & Spa and Lotus Desaru Resort.

The sea-fronting hotels offer a wide range of water sports, from adrenaline-rushing activities such as parasailing and jet-skiing to the more family-oriented kayaking and banana boat rides.

If you’re looking for some local seafood fare outside of the hotels, there are numerous restaurants in and around Desaru to choose from. Many opt to make the half-hour drive to the fishing village of Sungai Rengit, which is famous for its lobster, crabs, mantis prawns and other delights from the deep. Among the more popular eateries are Super Lobster, Jade Garden and You Kee, which are all pork-free.

Desaru Coast is about an hour’s drive from the Senai International Airport, which is served by numerous daily flights from KLIA and klia2 on AirAsia, Malindo Air, Malaysia Airlines and Firefly.
