Malindo Air resumes limited domestic flights amidst the Movement Control Order.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, stringent travel restrictions have been implemented worldwide, concurrent with various versions of lockdowns and movement control regulations in each country. The implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia has definitely wrought major changes in air travel operations as airlines have cut flights and ground their aircrafts.
However, following new developments regarding public movement in the country, Malaysian-based airline company Malindo Air is resuming its domestic services from KL International Airport (KLIA) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang, which began on April 27 2020 with a single daily flight to selected domestic destinations. Previously the airline had ceased flying activities on March 18, in compliance with the enforcement of the MCO nationwide.
The first service flights by Malindo Air was flight OD 1012 from KLIA to Kota Kinabalu and flight OD 1606 from KLIA to Kuching. The two flights departed simultaneously at 7:15am on 27 April. As a precaution, all passengers were required to have their own face masks to be worn at all times.
"The flights are being deployed to meet demand and allow our fellow Malaysians to return home, especially students who have been stranded on campuses since the lockdown began,” said the airline’s statement released on 24 April. All international flights from KLIA, however, remain suspended until further notice.
Fares for domestic flights start at RM199 one-way for routes within Peninsular Malaysia from Subang to Penang, Langkawi, Alor Star, Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, and Johor Bahru, the airlines said in a released statement.
Meanwhile, fares from KLIA to Kuching are at RM299 for one-way economy class and RM499 for one- way business class; while fares from KLIA to Kota Kinabalu are at RM399 (one-way economy class) and RM699 (one-way business class). Fares from KLIA to Penang are priced at RM159 for one-way economy class and RM399 for one-way business class respectively.
