Shandong-based airline touches down in Penang on October 29, 2019, coinciding with 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries
October 29, 2019 marked a momentous occasion as China’s Qingdao Airlines’ maiden Changsha- Quanzhou-Penang flight successfully landed at the Penang International Airport (PIA) at 4.15pm.
The flight, which had 42 passengers on- board Airbus A320neo, was also special as it coincided with the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China this year.
“This route will definitely deepen, promote and enhance the tourism, culture and economic exchanges between the government, enterprises, people, and individuals between China and Malaysia,” said Penang Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin during the press conference, which was also attended by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd airline marketing division general manager Mohamed Salluddin Mat Sah; Malaysia Chinese Tourism Association chairman Datuk Albert Tan; Pos Aviation Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Woo Kam Weng; and Qingdao Airlines deputy general manager Liang Zheng.
The Changsha-Quanzhou-Penang route would be a regular flight with fixed flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Qingdao Airlines’ Liang shared that the airlines would most likely launch other direct flights between Penang and various other cities in China such as Nanjing, Nanzhou, Tianjin and Qingdao.
“We do not have the exact schedule when these direct flights would be introduced, but we hope to launch them as soon as possible, with the help from the Penang government,” said Liang.
